Wild
Geese
They are a common sight in the Lower Rhine region from September to April.
But that wasn't always the case. It is only in the last 25 years or so that the impressive sight of thousands of geese on the winter meadows and pastures can be experienced here.
For many visitors to the Lower Rhine in recent years, the wild geese have become just as attractive an excursion destination as the idyllic floodplain landscape. At peak times around the turn of the year, 180,000 to 200,000 wild geese regularly visit the area.
The birds' favourite resting places are the area around Bislich, the Bislicher Insel, the Altrheinaue near Rees-Bienen and the Düffelt near Kranenburg. There, the birds graze in groups of a few dozen to tens of thousands in the open river landscape.
The Biological Station in the district of Wesel organises exciting excursions to our Arctic visitors!
