Old waterworks

on the Lippe

Wesel's old waterworks has been a technical monument since 1983.

It is one of the most beautiful and oldest preserved steam-powered plants of its kind in Germany. As a stop on the Route of Industrial Heritage, the building now provides visitors with a comprehensive picture of the water supply in the town of Wesel from 1886 to 1956.

The pumps of the waterworks were initially powered by steam and from 1924 by electricity. The structural and mechanical installations in operation until 1956 can be viewed today, including a brick-built shaft well (1886), a two-cylinder steam pump system (1903), electric centrifugal pump with water pressure-controlled starter (1924), etc.

As a special attraction, a drinking water educational trail has been set up at the old waterworks. It illustrates the path of the water from the well to the customer, the technology of the water supply and the values "hidden" beneath the earth's surface.
