Hanseatic

Mural

Our latest Hanseatic Highlight!

Since 2022, the most recent symbol of Wesel's proud Hanseatic heritage can be found in a wonderful 180 m² mural by the Dutch artists "De Strakke Hand" on the façade of a building at Schmidtstraße 5-7, very close to the pedestrian zone at Brückstraße/Viehtor. New Hanseatic murals can also be found as a connecting element of the Hanse Cycle Route in the other Hanseatic cities on the Rhine and in the Dutch Ijssel region.

The motif of the mural shows a trading scene in front of the façade of the historic town hall on the Grosser Markt. The donkey in the centre of the picture can be understood with a little wink, as each city involved in this project was asked to add a modern, contemporary touch to their historical painting. There's no question that this has to be the donkey for Wesel today!

The town's coat of arms with the eponymous three weasels can also be easily recognised in the painting. The other objects resemble the merchandise of the Hanseatic period as well as the working materials of medieval merchants and symbolise the economic trade between the towns involved.
